Saw a generalist at Wellington Hospital last week - a referral from my GP, who wanted a second opinion on some health probs I've been having lately. Second doctor's opening gambit: 'How do you feel about having been dependent on anti-depressants for the last three years?' Inevitably, esprit d'escalier offered all sorts of pithy ripostes, but in the moment I was shocked speechless. As a friend of mine put it, 'no one would ever think of asking a diabetic "how they feel" about being dependent on insulin.'
