It's my birthday today. I'm 43, and know that I am lucky to be healthy and happy. And in the interests of remaining so, I have just resigned from my job. I'm going to be the stayhome parent, spend more time with the kids, run the household, and breathe. I finish work on 28 May. I've enjoyed my job, and the people are lovely but the whole hamster-wheel deal just wasn't working for the family. This way is simpler, and will, I hope, be easier on everyone.
Here are my beautiful things for the weekend:
- Birthday yum cha at the Grand Century on Tory St (highly recommended). Maggie puts away prodigious quantities of dumplings, pioneers a new and astonishingly clever chopstick technique, and polishes off three custard tarts, eliciting an exclamation of 'Respeck!' from her admiring uncle.
- In-laws who know and love me well enough to give me jewellery and poetry.
- On Sunday morning, I drive to Tawa and buy a violin case from Craig Utting. Craig and I were in the Auckland Youth Orchestra in the mid-80s, and haven't seen each other since. We catch each other up on our lives, and both, at the same moment, recall orchestra camp, when the rain suddenly hammered on the tin roof and drowned out the New World Symphony. No one could hear anything, but we played on, and when the rain suddenly ceased, we emerged from the din in perfect unison, into the slow movement.
- When I get home, Maggie is standing on a chair licking golden syrup from a spoon. I help Pappy make you a cake! she explains happily. To each according to their abilities, adds Jack.
- Finishing the weekend with a fun gig at the Whanganui Jazz Club: a light-hearted evening performing for a warm, appreciative crowd. One elderly lady sat right at the front and beamed at me all the way through both hour-long sets. And I never tire of being asked to sign CDs for enthusiastic punters.
- After a late night driving back from Whanganui, a day off to do what I like with.
